Optimus Papi
That’s it, he can’t be human. Robot, alien, I don’t know what, but there is no way David Ortiz is human. Maybe even a transformer…Optimus Papi? After Theo couldn’t pull the trigger, and the Yankees made quite a few improvements, it looked like we would be tied with the Evil Empire in the AL East when the Sox entered the bottom of the 9th tonight.
But with a two run deficit Lil’ Alex Cora led off the 9th with a single, Yoooouk drew a walk, and suddenly it was Papi time. At this point, I think all I need to say is left, center or right and you can figure out the rest (center–dead center). Oh yeah, and that was his second of the game. Honestly, all I could do was laugh.
John Kruk believes in that situation teams should stop pitching to Papi. According to him teams should walk Papi, walk Manny (and a run in), and then take your chances with Lowell, a one run lead, and runner at third. I can’t believe this guy isn’t a major league manager.
What nobody will remember about this game is Kyle Snyder’s performance, and that’s really a shame; the guy pitched great. Really fantastic. He came in, gave up a leadoff single, and that was it: 4.1 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 BBs, 6 Ks. The only better long relief pitching I’ve ever seen was Pedro back in 1999, against the Indians…fitting.
The other thing people won’t remember is that even though Manny went deep, and Papi left the yard twice, the longest home run, by far was from Wily Mo Pena. The man almost hit the light tower ABOVE the green monster. If he hit this to right and not left, I’d be concerned for the windows at the Prudential.
However, it seems like no Optimus Papi game can be only flowers and sunshine. In the 3rd, Tek pulled up lame and is going in for an MRI on his knee tomorrow. Also, David Wells pitched no better then any Kip Wells or Corey Lilde that was on the market (4.2 innings, 8 ER, 3 HR).
We’ve got a one game lead in the AL East. So, until tomorrow, let’s enjoy yet another Optimus Papi victory.
