Be Careful What You Wish For

OK, next time I won’t yell at a highly desirable free agent to make up his freaking mind. Since I’m always a glass-half full guy (stop laughing…really, you can stop now…please, before you pull a stomach muscle) here are the upsides to the MFY swooping in at the last second to sign Teixeria to a $180M/8-year contract:

  • In the next few years, the MFY are going to end up with four expensive players that will only be able to play 1B or DH: Teixera, A-Rod, Posada and Jeter.
  • Lars Anderson’s path to Fenway is no longer blocked until 2016.
  • I don’t have to learn how to spell Teixeira’s name (that’s right, it’s spelled three different ways in this post alone).
  • The MFY are not allowed to sign Manny or Lowe now. That’s right, an actual MLB rule. We all wish there was a salary cap, but, this will have to do for now. I know that won’t help the Sox any, but it helps for when I watch those 2004 DVDs.

OK, who am I kidding, those are all terrible reasons. Here’s to hoping that either CC, Burnett or Texwhocareshowhisnameisspelledia becomes the next Mike Hampton. Please?

  1. Hey, look at it this way: Wasn’t Jason Giambi supposed to be the greatest first baseman when the Yanks signed him several years ago? That didn’t buy them any championships. Also, I’d hate to be Joe Girardi — the Yanks could win 120 games next year and he still wouldn’t win Manager of the Year honors because everyone knows the Yankees just bought it. So it will be like this: The Yankees will either not win it all, in which case they will be poster children for over-hyped, over-paid duds, or they will win it all, in which case everyone will shrug their shoulders and say, well that’s what all the money in the world can buy you. It’s really a no win situation for them.

  2. Mark Teixera won’t make the Yankees better. He’s all about himself and his stats. Hence the reason he’ll be playing for his 4th team in 22 months come April.
