When the observer is made aware through direct exposure to qualities, he knows something new about the world, namely, that they are ingredients init. Enjoyment produces its own kind of knowledge. So of course does pain. It is an old truism that he has not fully experienced what life is like who has had no pain. It is one of the great lessons of experience, and even though most of us (though not everyone, not masochists for example) would willingly forego such an experience, this is not to say that we learn nothing from it.
Fixture relies upon frame of reference; given the frame and all is fixed. The theory of relativity would probably have better been called the theory of relationality. The world is subjective only in virtue of the subject's selection of it. The subject's view of the object, made possible by the perspective which he can occupy, is subjective only in terms of his own limitations: he cannot see all round it or within it, say, and so widen his perspective; but that is not the fault of the object, which has as many perspectives as it has sides and insides.

Weinberg, Examination of Logical Positivism (London, 1936, Kegan Panl, Trench Trubner), p. 68. 12 13 PART I: COPING WITH KNOWLEDGE (3) That every knower is a subject of knowledge will have to be recognized and given its due. The valid side of idealism, in short, is how it treats of knowledge after it has been acquired, as sufficient in itself and without thought of further acquisition. I shall have more to say about this later when I come to examine the contents of knowledge. Meanwhile it is illustrative to use the language of idealism to describe the subjective end of the functioning of perspectives.
